Del Mar Opening Day 2011

Finally it was here!
Hats, high heels, fashion, good looking people and the summer breeze.

Opening Day at Del Mar is one of the most anticipated days in the horse racing industry. It has become one of the most important social event in San Diego; this time more than 47,000 people gathered "where the turf meets the surf" to enjoy the track, meet people, make money and to have fun. Once again more women showed up than men... and most of them couldn't walk at the end!
Before post time (2pm), the paddock was packed. Just like the rest of the venue it looked colorful and full of life.
The first race was taken by jockey Joseph Talamo and trainer Howard L.Zucker with "Price".  During the 10 race card, only Joseph Talamo repeated a winning race, however, two women jockeys took the price with them...that's what I call girl power!

The Oceanside Stakes, the featured race, had 14 eligible horses but only 9 tried to win a purse of $100, 000. The favorite was Mr. Commons, who recently ran in the Preakness.

The 10 winning horses of the day were:
Price (Joseph Talamo),
King Ledley (Kayla Stra)
Classy Lion (Tyler Baze)
Weemissfrankie (Rafael Bejarano)
Last Sting (Alonso Quinonez)
Mentidoso (Chantal Sutherland)
Money Lover (Martin Garcia)
Mr. Commons (Mike Smith; Ocenside Stakes)
Gilligan (Joseph Talamo)
Gahnzo Bob (Martin Pedroza; who was celebrating his 49th birthday).

My picks of the day were not that far from the horses across the board.
